TaxationThe Gloucester County Board of Taxation's mission is to ensure equity of assessments among all County taxpayers. This falls into two major categories, administrative and appellate as governed by Title 54 of the New Jersey Statutes.

Administratively, the County Assessor, under the supervision and control of the County Board of Taxation, shall be responsible for the administrative functions and, pursuant to such supervision and control, shall direct all officers (assessors) charged with the duty of making assessments for taxes in every taxing district in the County. The Equalization Table determines each municipality's share of the tax burden and disseminates tax rates for all twenty-four municipalities, prepare a summary, referred to as an Abstract of Ratables of taxable properties and tax obligation of each municipality, and achieves equalization by examining every deed filed to determine the relationship between the sale price and assessment so that the ratio of assessment can be established for apportionment of taxes.

In the Appellate category, the Board is the forum for formal objections of tax assessments. If you wish to file an appeal on your tax assessment, you must contact the Gloucester County Board of Taxation (856-307-6445) for a Petition of Appeal. This petition must be received by the County Tax Board on or before April 1st of the tax year, or May 1st if the municipality completed a reassessment or revaluation for the current tax year. If improvements are made during a tax year you may file a Petition of Appeal for Added /Omitted Assessments on or before December 1st of the tax year. These petitions include detailed instructions and a pamphlet titled "PROPER PREPARATION FOR TAX APPEAL HEARINGS"

As part of a pilot program approved by the State of New Jersey, the County has begun regionalizing the assessment of real property, taking over this function from all the Gloucester County municipalities, starting with five or six each year until all 24 taxing districts are under the County Assessor.  The first phase has begun  to include the inspection of all properties by a representative from Appraisal Systems, Inc, a full service real estate appraisal corporation (for additional information visit their site at www.asinj.com).  Each representative will have an Identification badge and their name will be registered with the local Police Department .
