Re.: Sentencing in attempted disarming of officer
James R. Dorton (DOB 12/28/84), of Gloucester City NJ was sentenced today to five years in New Jersey state prison for his admitted attempt to disarm a Woodbury police officer in a 10/10/16 struggle on Cooper Street in Woodbury.
In the incident, city police officers were dispatched to a location outside the Atrium Acute Care Center for a report of a man attempting to steal an NJ Transit bus. Defendant Dorton, identified as the suspect, attempted to flee. A struggle ensued when he was apprehended and he attempted to grab the service weapons of two officers. Transported to Inspira Hospital, Dorton again struggled, kicking a patrol car door, and once more reached for the officers’ weapons.
Dorton pleaded guilty 12/11/17 to the second-degree offense of attempting to disarm a police officer. Under terms of the plea agreement, Assistant Gloucester County Prosecutor Steven Salvati recommended the five year sentence. Superior Court Judge Robert P. Becker sentenced today in accordance with the agreement.
