The Division of Disability offers a five week Extended School Year (ESY) for school aged children enrolled in Gloucester County School Districts. This summer enrichment program offers a Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum for students diagnosed with social and emotional disorders.
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a curriculum that helps students identify and process their emotions in productive ways, form healthy relationships with peers and adults, and make responsible decisions.
Circle of Friends has implemented three learning goals for student’s success:
Goal 1— Develop self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success.
Goal 2— Use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships.
Goal 3—Demonstate decision-making skills and responsible behavior in personal, school and community environments.
Students will learn five core SEL skills:
1 - Self-awareness
2 - Social awareness
3 - Self-management
4 - Relationship skills
5 - Responsible decision making
These skills focus on students being responsible for their actions, being honest, recognizing their own and others’ feelings, and communicating respectfully in order to solve problems. Teaching these skills will improve students’ classroom behavior, readiness to learn and social-emotional development.
Students will practice strategies to manage their anger, fear, and stress, and ways to refuse engaging in risky behaviors. Professional staff and a student to staff ratio that does not exceed 3:1 assists students to identify, process and react to emotions in productive ways.
Circle of Friends is held on the North Campus of Bankbridge Regional School in a cooperative agreement between the County of Gloucester and the Gloucester County Special Services School District. This tuition based program has been cost effective and successful in meeting the social/emotional goals contained in the child's Individual Education Plan (IEP). Many students are diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, a disorder in the Autistic Spectrum.
