Sewage Disposal Systems

Personnel in the Environmental Health Division review and inspect septic systems and wells within Gloucester County.  The regulatory program is conducted by Registered Environmental Health Specialists licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.  Well and septic system submission information and applications are available through the following link to Applications and Forms.

Personnel review and inspect all aspects of proposed sewage disposal systems that serve individual homes and facilities that generate less than 2,000 gallons of sewage per day.  The review and inspection process is conducted to ensure the septic system has been constructed in compliance with the applicable regulatory standards.

Personnel will also investigate complaints about malfunctioning septic systems from an existing septic system serving an individual home or small business.

All newly constructed septic systems must be certified as being in compliance with the applicable regulations prior to use.  The certification is issued through a License to Operate and covers all newly constructed septic systems as well as all repairs, alterations or replacements of an existing septic system.   The process for obtaining approval for sewage disposal system repairs or alterations can be reviewed by clicking on this link: Applications and Forms

In addition, proposed additions to a dwelling or business that utilize a septic system  or changes to the volume or quality of the sewage effluent must be evaluated by this office prior to the issuance of a construction permit for the addition or change of use.  The process for obtaining approval for continued use of a septic system can be reviewed by clicking on this link: Applications and Forms.   Commercial facilities must have an engineer evaluate the septic system for a change of use. The form is available at: Applications and Forms.

Septic systems must be properly abandoned upon the replacement of the system, demolishing of the dwelling or connection to municipal sewerage.  The process requires the submission of documents for demolishing the septic system and an inspection to verify the abandonment of the septic system.  Forms for submitting for demolition can be obtained from the following link: Applications and Forms.
