Gloucester County Certified Gardeners Program

Certified Gardeners are individuals interested in gardening and volunteering in their community. As a Certified Gardener Intern you will receive a minimum of 50 hours of training in a variety of topics taught by leaders in the horticultural industry. In exchange for the training the individual is asked to volunteer 60 hours back to the program.The volunteer activities vary from staffing displays at community days, assisting county residents with their gardening and insect problems, teaching gardening classes to youth and adults and assisting the county, municipalities and local organizations with community beautification projects. If you have an interest in gardening and volunteering this program is for you. Both beginners and experienced gardeners will gain valuable knowledge and experience through this exciting new program. Certified Gardeners Helpline:
Residents may call or visit the Certified Gardeners for advice on all aspects of gardening and lawn care, including pest identification, plant disease diagnosis, gardening for pollinators and more.  Free pH soil testing is available. The Helpline is staffed on Wednesday mornings from 9 am til 12 pm, and at other times as well.  The Helpline can be reached by calling the Certified Gardener office at 856-307-6456, or the Helpline office at 856-307-6464.  The Helpline email address is gardener@co.gloucester.nj.us

Certified Gardener Beautification Projects 
Gloucester County Veteran’s Cemetery
The gardeners plant annual flowers and prepare the cemetery beds each spring for the Memorial Day services held there.

Glassboro Senior Center and Library
These gardens are designed and maintained by certified gardeners to enhance these two locations. Educational classes on gardening topics are also held at both locations throughout the year.
Shady Lane Nursing Home-Gardens here are maintained by Certified Gardeners to enhance the grounds for the residents to enjoy

Certified Gardeners Demonstration and Donation Gardens
Clayton Complex Demonstration Garden is located in front of building E, and includes two rain gardens, a shade garden, butterfly garden, wildflower plot,  herb bed and several raised vegetable beds.
Historic Gardens at the James and Ann Whitall House
at Red Bank Battlefield in National Park feature a kitchen garden, vegetable garden, 4 colonial herb beds, a children’s garden, a fruit orchard and a fragrance garden.

The Certified Gardener Butterfly House
is located adjacent to the James and Ann Whitall House in Red Bank Battlefield in National Park. The house features butterflies native to New Jersey including the Monarch. The house is open to tours Thursday- Sunday, May- September.  
Red Bank Battlefield Donation Garden-is located near the James & Ann Whitall House, and produce is donated to local food pantries.
Gloucester Co. Library Main Branch at Mullica Hill-is both a beautification project and a demonstration garden for both children and adults
The Olde Stone House Historic Garden-Egg Harbor Road in Washington Twp. features kitchen and herb gardens
Camp Salute-Clayton, Veterans Housing Complex gardens provide vegetables for residents as well as peaceful areas for families to spend outdoor time

Certified Gardener Educational Events
The Gloucester County Horticultural Symposium is held every year in April. This programs brings renowned speakers to the area to present on their area of expertise.Click Here For Brochure and schedule (PDF)
Spring Garden Expo and Plant Sale is held annually on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. The day features seminars and demonstrations on gardening along with a plant sale. The plant sale features a large selection of unique heirloom vegetable varieties along with herbs, annuals and hanging baskets.
Ann Whitall Flower Show will is held annually in June. The day features a display of horticulture specimens and floral arrangements. Any Gloucester County resident may participate in the show at no charge. The show is open to the general public. For show entry information, contact the certified gardener office

Certified Gardener Horticultural Therapy Program
St. John of God School is located in Deptford for special needs youth. Certified gardeners assist the students with weekly garden lessons and activities
