Free Vision Screenings Available to Residents
(Woodbury, NJ) – Gloucester County Freeholders Adam J. Taliaferro and Freeholder Lyman Barnes announced that appointments are available for free eye screenings for county residents. Through a program provided bythe Board of Chosen Freeholders and the NJ Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Gloucester County offers free eye screenings twice a month for all county children and adults over the age of 4. This service is provided in an effort to prevent or limit the impact of vision loss in our county.
Freeholder Lyman Barnes said, “We are a month into the new school year and it is important for parents to monitor their children’s eyesight. Children should have their eyes examined yearly because their vision can change quickly and an exam can diagnose problems that directly affect learning.”
Freeholder Taliaferro said that Gloucester County is providing the free exams for both children and adults. Children under the age of 18 will need the signature of a parent or guardian.
Taliaferro said, “Many families do not have insurance that covers optometry but everyone can get an eye exam through this program simply by making an appointment.”
Half of all vision loss could be prevented by early detection of disorders and appropriate follow up care. Eye diseases, like Glaucoma, can cause vision damage and eventual blindness without the patient experiencing any symptoms.
Taliaferro and Barnes said that the Division of Disability Services offers the free eye screenings at two locations including evening hours. Appointments can be made for the second Wednesday of every month from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Gloucester County Health Department at 204 East Holly Sewell, and on the last Wednesday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon at the Shady Lane Home at 256 County House Road, Clarksboro.
Please call the Division of Disability Services at (856) 384-6842 to make an appointment for free eye screening for yourself and family members. Walk-ins are accepted for Glaucoma screenings only.
