2018 Household Special Waste collection dates announced

(Swedesboro, NJ) -- Gloucester County Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger announced the dates for the County's 2018 Household Special Waste (HSW) Collection Program with the first date taking place in April.

Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger said, "These collection events are extremely successful and keep hundreds of thousands of pounds of chemicals and other materials that cannot be placed in the regular trash from ending up in our landfill."

The HSW Program is a series of periodic collection events taking place at specified locations where Gloucester County residents can drop-off specific household waste items. This service is free to Gloucester County residents, and therefore businesses are not permitted to participate.

Items that can be dropped off include: old oil-based paint, motor oil, antifreeze, rechargeable batteries, CFL bulbs, fluorescent tubes, fire extinguishers, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, and similar materials for recycling, reuse, and/or proper disposal.

A typical collection year yields about 173,000 pounds of materials from over 2,000 county residents. By collecting these items from residents, the Office of Recycling and Board of Chosen Freeholders is preventing the items from harming the environment and ending up in waterways or other locations.

The dates for these periodic collection events include:

April 21 and Sep. 22 at the Gloucester County Solid Waste Complex, 493 Monroeville Rd. (County Rt. 694), South Harrison Township

May 19 and Oct. 20 at the Gloucester County Public Works Department, 1200 N. Delsea Dr., Clayton.

All events are conducted rain-or-shine and start at 8 a.m. and end at 2 p.m.  No materials will be accepted after 2 p.m. Residents must adhere to the posted event times; materials cannot be accepted after the closing time. Materials will only be accepted for each scheduled event at the designated drop-off site and will not be accepted at any other location.
