FREEHOLDERS PROVIDE SENIORS WITH VOUCHERS FOR PRODUCE The $20 vouchers are to purchase fruits and vegetables from local farm markets

WOODBURY, NJ - Gloucester County Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney and Freeholder Helene M. Reed announced today produce vouchers will be distributed for Gloucester County senior citizens for purchases at designated Farmer's Markets.

"These vouchers will go a long way in assisting our older residents in obtaining fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the summer and fall," said Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney. "This is a popular program and we are thankful that so many local markets choose to participate," said Sweeney.

Freeholder Helene Reed said that the Farmer's Market program has been extremely successful since it began in 2001. "This program helps our senior citizens to improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle by making fresh produce more accessible to them. Fruits and vegetables provide needed nutrients, are low calorie, and can help prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease." Freeholder Reed is the liaison to the County's Department of Health and Senior Services.

Seniors will be given $20.00 in vouchers per household on a first come, first served basis. The vouchers are active through November 30, 2005 and valid for redemption at designated Farmer's Markets (see list below). The State of New Jersey requires the County to target low income senior citizens for the program such as those seniors who are on PAAD or Medicaid. All recipients are asked to sign the voucher register before receiving the farmer's market voucher.
