(Woodbury, NJ) - Gloucester County Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney and Freeholder Bill Krebs announced the schedule today for the 4th Annual James G. Atkinson Memorial Holiday Basketball Classic Tournament that will be held at Gloucester County College on Tuesday, December 27th and Wednesday, December 28th, 2005.

This year's teams include newcomers Kingsway, Washington Twp. and West Deptford, as well as returning teams from Deptford, Paulsboro and Williamstown.

"This is an exciting tournament for the athletes and the spectators, and it is one that means a lot to the Atkinson family and his friends," said Freeholder Director Sweeney of the late Freeholder Director James. G. Atkinson.  Freeholder Atkinson also served on the Freeholder Board for almost 20 years and as Mayor to Washington Township for six years during his lengthy career in public service.  "Jim loved the earth and he loved children and he was an advocate for both.  We are proud to honor him with this Tournament each year because he would have loved it and he was a great public servant and friend who we still dearly miss," said Director Sweeney.

Sweeney said that proceeds from the James G. Atkinson Foundation help deserving men and women get a great start on their college education at Gloucester County College who otherwise would not be able to.Last year's tournament provided this year's recipient, a single mother of three who is active in community organizations, with a scholarship that she uses to attend the Nursing program at Gloucester County College.

Freeholder Krebs, who has helped coordinate the Tournament since its inception, said, "We have outstanding high school teams participate every year, and this year we are looking forward to three new teams joining in the tournament."  Krebs said, "The games are really exciting and we have great sponsors who help us defray the costs of the event so that any proceeds go directly to the James G. Atkinson Foundation for scholarships."

"Schools are closed for the week and we hope families use this opportunity to come out to the Basketball Classic Tournament and support our local players and the memory of a great man," said Freeholder Krebs.

Admission for adults is $4 and students $3 per session (afternoon or evening).  All games played at Gloucester County College, Sewell, NJ
