Gloucester County Ready to Administer Flu Inoculation Program County-Wide Flu Clinics Will Begin on October 18th

(Woodbury, NJ) – Gloucester County Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney and Freeholder Helene M. Reed, liaison to Health and Senior Services, today announced the county’s 2006 Flu Shot program and schedule, which they said will begin on October 18th and run through December 11th.

“The county has a sufficient supply of vaccine to immunize our residents,” said Freeholder Director Sweeney.  “This program is an investment in the health of the county. Preventing the flu keeps people out of the emergency rooms, from missing work and school, and from spreading it to those who are medically compromised could possibly die from the virus,” Sweeney stated.

Sweeney said, “In addition to our traditional flu shot sites, we are again offering evening hours and weekends so that working families can take advantage of the program.”  The county also has two drive-thru sites scheduled for the disabled and those who have a hard time negotiating the indoor sites.

“This is by far one of the largest-scale health programs the county undertakes each year,” Freeholder Helene Reed said.  “The County’s Health Department will visit each municipality at least once throughout the schedule.”

Reed said, “The Board of Freeholders is committed to a healthy Gloucester County and our goal is to make this program convenient and accessible to our senior citizens and working families.”  Freeholder Reed serves as the liaison to the County Department of Health & Senior Services.

There is no out-of-pocket cost for the flu shot, which are available to Gloucester County residents only.  The county’s newsletter, which lists the County’s 2006 Flu Shot clinic schedule and guidelines, will be delivered to households in the coming week.

For questions about the flu shot residents can call the Gloucester County Department of Health & Senior Services at (856) 262-4101.

The following guidelines are followed for the Gloucester County Influenza Immunization Program:

  • This year the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is recommending Flu Vaccine for all persons aged 6 months and over.
  • Available to County residents only
  • Drive-Thru clinics have been scheduled to accommodate those citizens that have difficulty negotiating indoor sites.

  • Children ages 6 months-18 years must be accompanied by a parent or legal Guardian.
  • Children are encouraged to see their own pediatricians
  • Children without a Pediatrician, under the age of 5, will only be immunized during the scheduled “Children’s Clinics”.
  • Children under the age of 9 receiving flu immunization for the first time need two
shots.  The second shot will be scheduled at the first visit.
  • Children under 5 years of age, will be immunized by pediatric nurses at the Health Center in Washington Township only.

Some people should check with a doctor before taking flu vaccine:
