County Begins Reconstruction & Realignment of Tuckahoe Road in Franklin Township

(Franklin Twp., NJ) Gloucester County Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney and Freeholder Deputy Director Robert Damminger announced that Gloucester County has begun reconstructing and realignment of Tuckahoe Road (CR 557) in Franklin Township.

The project is being completed to improve the roadway curvature, meet safety standards and to realign the southern end of the road to create a new intersection with Route 40.  The Freeholders said that the work will begin half a mile south of the Lake Avenue/Victoria Avenue intersection and extend to half a mile northwest of the Piney Hollow Road intersection in Franklin.

The improvements will include widening of the existing roadway to provide 10-foot shoulders, full-depth replacement of existing pavement, minor realignments to improve roadway curvature, provision of superelevation to meet safety standards, and realignment of the southern end of the road to create a new intersection with Route 40.  New drainage inlets and culverts will be installed and stormwater basin management facilities will be constructed.

The project will also include the installation of new long life traffic stripes, raised pavement markers, guide rail upgrades along with the replacement of existing curb pieces with Eco Type heads and the installation of bicycle safe grates as needed. New curbing will be constructed and driveway aprons affected by the construction will be replaced.

Clearing operations have begun this week and to facilitate construction, a road detour will be implemented beginning on or about February 1, 2010. During the detour, residents within the project limits will have access to their homes. Driveway aprons within the project limits shall be maintained by the contractor during construction.  The remaining traveling public shall follow the posted detour route.

The $2.3 million project is federally funded.  Work is being performed by South State Inc. and should be completed within 8 months.
