Gloucester County EMS Offers Community Education Courses
(Woodbury, NJ) - Gloucester County Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney and Freeholder Jean DuBois announced today that Gloucester County EMS (GCEMS) will offer Community Education courses to healthcare professionals and the public.
"One of the missions of our GCEMS is to help educate people about CPR, first aid and how to handle an emergency situation until help arrives. GCEMS staff possesses a great deal of knowledge that is a value to our community," said Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney.
Sweeney said, "The courses will be taught by certified instructors and will benefit parents, caregivers, healthcare providers and children."
Freeholder Jean DuBois said that GCEMS will also customize courses for county businesses and organizations.
"We want to get people properly trained to handle emergency situations, administer CPR, and learn choking skills so they can be an assist in a time of crisis until a trained professional arrives. You can never know when you will be in a situation where someone may need help, but being prepared could help save a life," DuBois stated.

Saturday, February 13, 2010 - Family & Friends CPR - 9:00AM-1:00PM - Woolwich Twp. Municipal Building - Cost $10 for materials.
This course is designed specifically for family members, friends and members of the general public who want to learn basic CPR, but do not require a certification card. The course includes instruction in adult, child and infant CPR and choking skills, and includes an overview of an AED (automated external defibrillator). For those interested, we will also offer the Family & Friends First Aid For Children" component for no additional charge immediately following the CPR portion of the class. This module teaches how to manage illness and injuries in a child for the first few minutes until professional help arrives.
Saturday, February 20, 2010 - BLS for the Healthcare Provider - 9:00AM-1:00PM - Gloucester County Fire Academy - Cost $10 for materials.
This course is designed to teach healthcare providers the skills of CPR for all ages, as well as use of an AED and relief of choking. This course is a certification course, that includes written and skills testing.
Saturday and Sunday, February 27-28, 2010 - Safe Sitter- 9:00AM-4:00PM each day - Watch Me Learn Preschool, Woolwich Twp - Cost $30.00 for materials.
This 2-day 12 ½ hour course is a medically accurate program that teaches boys and girls ages 11 to 13 how to handle emergencies when caring for children. Thousands of young adolescents across the country have been trained by Safe Sitter to handle life threatening emergencies. This class teaches safe and nurturing child care techniques, behavior management skills, and appropriate responses to medical emergencies, including infant and child CPR and relief of choking. To successfully complete the Safe Sitter program, students must pass a rigorous practical and written test to show that they have mastered the key concepts and have the skills necessary to handle an emergency. Scholarships to cover the cost of tuition are available through Safe Sitter, Inc. based on financial need. Please contact GCEMS for more information.
