Gloucester County Announces Flu Inoculation Program County-Wide Flu Clinics Will Take Place from October thru End of December.

(Woodbury, NJ) Gloucester County Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney and Freeholder Helene M. Reed, liaison to Health and Senior Services, today announced the countys 2007 Flu Shot program and schedule, which they said will begin on October 13th and run through December 27th.

Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney said, The County has acquired a sufficient supply of flu vaccine to immunize residents and we have 35 different locations, dates and times for citizens to take advantage of the program.

Sweeney said that in addition to the traditional flu shot clinics the county is again offering weekend clinics, evening hours, and drive-thru clinics so that all county residents who want to receive a flu shot will have access to one.

We make this program convenient and accessible to our senior citizens and working families.  We dont want anyone to end up in the emergency room or missing work because they didnt get their flu shot, Sweeney said.  This program is an investment in the health of the county.

Director Sweeney said that in 2006 the County administered 22,035 flu shots and a similar number is anticipated to be given this year.  There is no out-of-pocket cost for the flu shot, which are available to Gloucester County residents only.

Freeholder Helene Reed said that the Countys Health Department will visit each municipality at least once throughout the schedule. This is one of the most important public health outreach operations we run during the year because we want to make sure our seniors and all residents who need a flu shot get a flu shot.

Reed, who is the liaison to the Countys Department of Health & Senior Services, said that there are several actions that citizens can take before attending a flu shot clinic.  We have added the Flu Consent Form to our website this year and residents can fill it out and bring it with them, said Reed.  If residents do not have access to a computer or printer they are encouraged to bring a return address label to the flu shot clinic to help speed up the paperwork process.

We have been doing this long enough now that we run quite a smooth operation, said Freeholder Reed.

A complete schedule and guidelines of the Gloucester County 2007 Flu Program will be published in the countys newsletter, which will be delivered to households beginning October 8th.

For questions about the flu shot residents can call the Gloucester County Department of Health & Senior Services at (856) 218-4101 for further information.

The following guidelines are followed for the Gloucester County Influenza Immunization Program:

  • This year the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is recommending Flu Vaccine for all persons aged 6 months and over.
  • Available to County residents only
  • Drive-Thru clinics have been scheduled to accommodate those citizens that have difficulty walking or standing in lines.

Children and the Flu Vaccine:

  • Children are encouraged to see their own pediatrician for their vaccine.
  • Children without a Pediatrician, under the age of 5, can attend the scheduled Childrens Clinics.
  • Children ages 6 months-18 years must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
  • Children under the age of 9 receiving flu immunization for the first time need two shots. The second shot will be scheduled when the first shot is provided.

Some people should check with a doctor before taking flu vaccine:
