County Kicks Off Food Safety Education Month with School District Food Service Workers
(Washington Twp., NJ) - September has been designated as National Food Safety Education Month and the Gloucester County Department of Health will kickoff the 13th annual observation by holding a Food Safety Fair for Washington Township School District food service employees on August 30th.
"In the past year there have been many instances nationally about safe food handling and other issues surrounding food safety, and this program will provide continuing information about food codes, proper hand washing and food borne viruses," said Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney. "Offering additional training to school district food service employees is another way to keep our children safe and healthy," Sweeney said.
Freeholder Helene M. Reed said that this year's national theme, "Viruses: They're in your Hands', focuses on the importance of food safety education and training among restaurant and foodservice workers.
"At the beginning of the year New Jersey made changes to its food safety code to bring everyone in line with national standards and to protect our residents by increasing food safety," said Freeholder Reed. "Gloucester County Health Inspectors have been educating establishments about the new code and assisting them in coming into compliance."
"The annual food safety campaign builds awareness of the restaurant and foodservice industry's commitment to serving safe food, heighten awareness about the importance of food safety education, and encourage food safety training among not only our businesses and schools but also our community members," said Freeholder Reed.
The information that will be presented in the August 30th Workshop will focus on the new food codes, the safe handling of foods and proper hand washing, and food borne Viruses.
