2010 Gloucester County Women of Achievement
Ten Gloucester County Women will be recognized on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at Auletto's in Deptford for their outstanding contributions to their professional field, humanitarianism, volunteerism, and contributions to their communities and families. The honorees were nominated and selected by the Commission for Women and the GC Branch of the American Association of University Women.
Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney said, "Gloucester County is fortunate to be home to many talented and innovative women. The women who will be honored have broken through gender barriers, financial barriers and other obstacles to inspire men, women and children to improve their lives. We are grateful to acknowledge their achievement."

DR. CYNTHIA BILICKI-NIMZ, Doctor of Physical Therapy, brings a wealth of varied experience to her position as physical therapist at Heartland Physical Therapy. She has consistently increased her education to expand her functions and positions in the field - from personal fitness trainer to college professor and author. Cynthia's holistic approach focuses on women's preventative physical health programs as opposed to therapeutic ones. Her special interest is Midlife Fitness for Women. She advises young women to "build a good support system, adopt a life philosophy and laugh a lot."
JOAN DILLON Executive Director of Glassboro Child Development Center since 2004 has devoted 23 years of service to this highly effective organization, serving in many of the functions of the Center from Program and Educational Supervisor to Director of Grants and Development. She supervises a staff of 45 and over the years has overseen many programs like Kids Read, Healthy Kids, and Family Literacy. It is safe to say Joan's work at the Center has positively influenced hundreds of children, many of whom are now parents themselves. Joan, who says she received from the Center, "priceless support when hired as a newly divorced mother of an infant" made it her mission "to secure the resources for the agency to provide support for as many women and families as possible to enable their success."
DR. DIANNE DORLAND has served ten years as dean of Rowan University's College of Engineering, where she manages a college budget of $5.5 million plus over $10 million in external spending and funded awards. A decade of guiding the young College of Engineering to its present strength today drew on her previous experience in academia, as well as an early career in the private sector for Union Carbide and Dupont. Today she exerts influence her chosen field through her work in professional engineering organizations, like the 40,000 member American Institute of Chemical Engineers, for which she served as its first woman president in 2003. Dianne remains "very excited about engineering education at Rowan." Pride in her many achievements at Rowan are equaled by pride in her four year old grandson.
WANDA P. HARDY, Finance and Management Consultant, guides government, nonprofit organizations, academic institutions and private groups to reach their full potential, especially economically. Over the past seven years, through Credit Worthy which she established in 2003, Wanda has guided 1200 women to better financial practices and basic money management skills. She currently serves on the Wells Fargo! Wachovia Board and has received the AAUW Eleanor Roosevelt Award. Wanda believes that her most significant contribution to women has been to "help them develop the financial know how to break through economic barriers. She advises young women that "anyone can wish for success, but without a definite plan to achieve you goal, it is just wishful thinking."
PENNI HERITAGE, ten years ago, shifted from fruit to grapes "just one" of the 150 acres of Heritage Orchards she managed. Thus was born a new and now thriving Gloucester County wine industry which today boasts five wineries. She sought a way to keep the family farm she managed (first with her father-in-law and then alone) profitable enough to stay in business. She had already established a farm market for direct marketing but was seeking a second crop for direct product use. Today that one acre has grown to 50 acres producing tons of grapes for the many varietals of wines available at the successful Heritage Station Winery, which will preserve the farm for her three sons (two already in the business). Penni, an equal opportunity employer, urges girls "to choose work they love".
DR. NOREEN D. LANZA, Veterinarian and Owner of Raccoon Valley Animal Hospital, became the first I large animal Vet in the Gloucester-Salem County area in 1981, just after graduating from Cornell. Within three short years she left her job at Pilesgrove Animal Hospital to start her own practice and establish the Raccoon Valley Animal Hospital. Over its 20 year history she has, developed a predominantly female staff. Thus she has provided employment for countless women, fostering many to further their education and careers. Last year she added a Rutgers Law degree to list of competencies hoping "to give back to the Vet community" by working on animal related legislation. "Go for your dream," she says. "The sky's the limit - set goals - work hard."
LYNDA JUALL CARPENITO-MOYET, internationally renowned author of nursing text books, in use throughout the world, has lectured and consulted in all 50 of the United States, Mexico and Canada, and in Europe, Asia and South America. Her textbooks advocate and teach an organized and defendable system of nursing diagnoses. In addition to her writing and lecture activities Lynda has maintained an active hands-on presence in the field of primary care. In 1986 she completed the advanced degree of Nurse Practitioner and began yet a third phase of her career - nurse, author and nurse practitioner. She currently practices at Ces Pen Health Services in Chester, PA. Lynda challenges girls "to find a career they love and work hard at it." She also finds time to be a devoted grandmother to her two young grandsons.
HELENE REED, a role model for women pioneering in politics, has many "firsts" to her credit beginning in the private sector and flowing into the public sector. She was the first president of the Washington Memorial Hospital (Kennedy) Credit Union. She gained early notice in politics as the first woman to serve on the Monroe Township Council, with three years as Council President. She was the first woman to be elected to a third term to the Gloucester County Board of Freeholders, and today serves Gloucester County as its first woman Surrogate. Helene takes great pride and joy in her three children and six grandchildren. She urges women "to stand up and be recognized and believe in their ability to achieve, lead and influence."
ANGELA SNYDER, President and CEO of The Bank, manages Retail and Marketing initiatives and Branch Expansion, providing overall direction to all branches and administrative areas of the retail bank. Currently she devotes much talent, time and energy to the "Women's Leadership Council" which she founded when she saw a need "to build a strong network of women leaders who work toward a common goal of enriching the lives of women." Angela believes that "opportunities are non-gender related, but rather created by passion to door change." She reminds young girls that "a career is a journey and although planning for the future is critical, always take time to enjoy and learn from the part of the journey you are on."
DR. ZALPHIA WILSON HILL, School Counselor at Clearview Regional High, believes "the sign of a strong community is a strong school system." Throughout her thirty year career as an educator (twenty as a counselor) she has had limitless opportunity to strengthen that system. In her current position of high school counselor she sees as one of her important goals "preparing girls for their future with a strong foundation in math and science." She sees this as a way to prepare them for the many opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math which can lead to upward social and economic mobility. "She tells girls to Love learning and what they do- have integrity and a work ethic regardless of the job -collaborate and treat all coworkers with respect." Zalphia is the proud mother of two daughters. Devon, who graduated from Smith College, and Taylor, who graduated from Williams College, now a researcher for Cambridge Polymer Research Company in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
