Signal Operational at Route 322 & Clems Run Road in Harrison Township
(Harrison Twp.) - Gloucester County Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney and Freeholder Deputy Director Robert M. Damminger switched on the new traffic signal at Route 322 and Clems Run Road (CR623) today. The Freeholders were joined by Harrison Mayor Lou Manzo and Deputy Mayor Clowney.
Phase I of the bypass reconnects to the existing alignment of Route 322 at the new signalized intersection at Clems Run Road. A small section of this 1 ½ mile new road will utilize a section of Walters Road. Walters Road is being realigned with the new roadway to allow for better traffic flow.
"This project has gone extremely smoothly. This is going to be a much safer intersection due to this new signal and these improvements," said Freeholder Director Sweeney.
"We have heard nothing but positive responses from the residents of Harrison and the motorists who utilize these roadways on a daily basis. Before we began these improvements to both Richwood and Mullica Hill, these were two very dangerous areas that were plagued with accidents and delays. We are excited to move ahead with the actual bypass portion of the project next," Sweeney stated.
The Route US 322 corridor is a major east-west connector for Gloucester County which serves not only the heart of Gloucester County but is a vital link for the State and interstate traffic and commerce. Over 20,000 vehicles travel 322 daily.
Damminger said that all aspects of the project were moving on schedule and budget.
"The county has made tremendous progress on this project since it was first announced in 2007. We have made major changes to Route 322 in the Richwood section that now allow the residents of Harrison to travel on roads they did not use for years due to traffic congestion. The addition of this signal and the future construction of the bypass that will create a marked turn-around for the Mullica Hill business district, residents and shoppers," stated Freeholder Deputy Director Damminger.
A contract is scheduled to be voted upon at the December 15 Freeholder Meeting for the construction of the bypass.
When completed, the Route 322 bypass road will realign and separate the US Route 322 traffic. US Route 322 will continue straight at the Route 45 intersection and traverse through an undeveloped area to the east of Mullica Hill. The intersection will have left turn lanes added on all approaches and a right turn lane eastbound on US Route 322 southbound to Route 45. The bypass road will have one lane in each direction of travel with shoulders.
