County Constantly Evaluating and Replacing Its Bridges
(Clayton, NJ) - There are 90 bridges with spans greater than 20 feet in Gloucester County. These bridges are inspected every two years by a licensed engineer through the NJ DOT. The County's Office of the Engineer receives a report about the inspections and utilizes the findings to determine which bridges the county needs to replace or repair.
"The tragic events that occurred last week in Minnesota are still on everyone's mind," said Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney. "The county has already completed one bridge replacement this year and is beginning another this week. We keep an aggressive schedule on our bridge replacement program," the Freeholder Director said.
Freeholder Deputy Director Bob Damminger said that although none of the county's spans are the design of the bridge that collapsed into the Mississippi River in Minneapolis last week; that the county is vigilant about its bridge safety program. "We monitor the bridges closely, if they need repair we get our Highway Division on it right away, and if they need to be weight restricted until they can be replaced than a load restriction is enforced," Damminger stated.
"The county will be out to bid on the Main Street bridge in Mantua very soon and we have several more bridges that are entering the construction phase or are in the engineering phase that will be replaced in the next year or two," said Damminger.
Bridges currently in the county's replacement program include:
These are in addition to the Wilson Road Bridge in Washington Twp. which is currently under construction and the Whitehall Bridge in Monroe, in which replacement was completed in May.
