Gloucester County Had Positive Job Growth – Was 76th in Nation for Employment Growth in 2008
(Woodbury, NJ) – Gloucester County had the highest positive job growth of all other New Jersey counties between July and September 2008 according to Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics released this week.
Gloucester County was ranked 76th in the nation for employment growth during 3Q 2008 (July – September) of the 335 largest counties in the nation.
“We saw a four percent growth for jobs here toward the end of the year when things were really starting to go sour around the nation. That is a very positive sign for our local economy,” said Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney. “We have many infrastructure projects that are gearing up in the county, such as Route 322 and the Port of Paulsboro, that are going to continue to add jobs here.”
“Forward motion” is the term that Freeholder Joseph A. Brigandi Jr. used to describe the job growth in Gloucester County. “Economic Development doesn’t just happen, the county works at following through on its plan to attract quality jobs to our region so that our residents can be successful. We keep forging ahead to tackle obstacles, like the county has done to provide redevelopment plans and brownfield plans to our municipalities, so that we can attract business,” said Brigandi. Freeholder Brigandi is the liaison to the Department of Economic Development.
Some examples of new business or expansions that took place during the third quarter time frame last year were 80 new full time employees at George Young Company, 15 new professional and lab positions created at AmSpec in Paulsboro, and an expansion at Chelten House Products in Logan and Bellia Office Furniture in Swedesboro.
Freeholder Director Sweeney said, “We are not saying that times are not tough out there, because they are. We are working night and day to stay ahead of the curve so that when the national economy picks up Gloucester County will continue to be in a strong position to attract employers.”
According Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics Mercer County was the only other county in New Jersey with positive job growth at 0.3% over the prior year. For the full report go to http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cewqtr.pdf (Gloucester County information appears on page 11).
