Emergency Preparedness Training Seminar on April 25th at RiverWinds
(West Deptford, NJ) – The Gloucester County Office of Disability Services will hold a workshop geared toward agencies, special needs providers, and municipalities and schools to educate the groups on emergency preparedness with regard to special needs considerations.
“Being prepared for an emergency is something every household should do,” stated Gloucester County Freeholder Director Sweeney. “Institutions and providers who deal with individuals who have special needs and disabilities need to have plans in place for emergencies too, and those plans may require more logistics,” said Sweeney.
“This workshop will offer many important tools for governments, schools, agencies and providers in how to plan for an emergency and how to enact those plans if necessary,” Director Sweeney said.
Speakers and topics covered at the workshop include:
Len Clark of the Gloucester County Office Emergency Management will address information regarding what an individual should do in the event of an emergency including necessary supplies and Special Needs Considerations.
NJ State Trooper Bill Craney, Liaison State Office of Emergency Management will discuss the Role of Emergency Management, the structure in NJ – State, County, Local, Planning efforts, Response and Recovery from Disasters.
Shammi Carr, Cornell University, Northeast ADA & IT Center (ADA Specialist) will address coordination efforts between emergency management and emergency responders. Additionally, she will address the aftermath of Katrina and what was learned to assist emergency management in disaster preparedness and response.
Freeholder Warren S. Wallace, liaison to the Office of Disability Services, said, “We have valuable resources and detailed information to offer those with disabilities and those who care for people with special needs and this training seminar could help save a life someday.”
Wallace said that The Kessler Foundation and Community Health Law Project will supply Emergency Preparedness Resources (First Aid/ Emergency Preparedness Kits) for attendees.
The workshop will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 from 9:00am – 12:00 pm at RiverWinds Community Center, West Deptford. Pre-registration is required by calling 384-6840.
